Phillip Kapraun

Over the course of his career in veterinary medicine, Dr. Phillip Kapraun has worked to advance the treatment of lameness and related conditions in performance horses. Based in Harvard, Illinois, he practices as owner of Harvard Equine Practice, where he treats a diverse patient base that includes standardbred and quarterhorses as well as horses competing in barrel racing, roping, and other events. To maximize the health and success of these animals, Dr. Phillip Kapraun draws on an in-depth knowledge of treatments ranging from standard joint injections to the experimental use of honeybee venom.

A graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Phillip Kapraun continues to work with university colleagues Drs. Santiago Gutierrez and Kevin Kline to assess common lameness issues and treatments. He has focused on the treatment of osteochondrosis and osteochondritis dissecans, both common joint abnormalities in young horses. Active in the development of treatment standards, he has co-authored several papers on the topic and is in the process of completing several more.

Dr. Phillip Kapraun stands out as recipient of the James Laird Memorial Award for Excellence, presented by the Wisconsin Harness Horseman's Association in recognition of his work with racehorses. A regular presenter at the association's annual meeting, he has also shared his expertise at meetings of the Iowa Harness Horseman's Association, the North Illinois Veterinary Medical Association, and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.
